Milford H. Marchant Jr., M.D.
Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy, Shoulder Reconstruction
Dr. Marchant is a fellowship trained sports medicine specialist at Bay Area Orthopaedics. He has clinical expertise in treating a wide variety of sports-related injuries and arthritis of the shoulder, elbow, hip and knee. He specializes in the non-operative and operative treatment of injuries in both youth and adult patients of all skill levels, from recreational to professional athletes. In caring for his patients, he emphasizes patient education and the importance of injury prevention and rehabilitation.
Most recently, Dr. Marchant completed a fellowship in orthopaedic sports medicine at the world-renowned Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic (Los Angeles, CA). During his fellowship, he assisted the head team physician in the orthopaedic care of the 2009 World Champion Los Angeles Lakers. In addition, he served as an assistant team physician for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Kings, Los Angeles Sparks, Anaheim Ducks, and Fullerton College. While caring for professional athletes, his training allowed him to gain expertise in injury prevention and non-operative treatment modalities. In particular, he acquired extensive knowledge in the care of overhead athletes. Working among innovators in the field of sports medicine, Dr. Marchant further developed skills in cutting-edge arthroscopy techniques of the shoulder, elbow, hip, and knee, as well as in joint preserving and reconstructive procedures of the shoulder and elbow. He is currently a fellow-member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Dr. Marchant attended the University of Maryland School of Medicine where he graduated with honors as a Doctor of Medicine, and was further distinguished in the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. He continued his medical training as an Orthopaedic Surgery Resident at Duke University Medical Center where his fellow residents presented him with the John M. Harrelson Chief Resident Teaching Award. Assisting the Sports Medicine Division at Duke, he served as one of the resident physicians for Duke Athletics. He also developed a strong interest in research while at Duke, contributed to numerous orthopaedic publications, and presented at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Prior to medical school, Dr. Marchant attended graduate school at Georgetown University (Washington DC) where he obtained a Master of Science in Physiology and Biophysics. While studying at Georgetown, he met his future wife Sarah, who was attending nursing school. Living in Washington DC, he further expanded his pre-medical training as a research assistant for the pediatric trauma service at Children's National Medical Center â focusing on injury prevention. During his graduate work, he remained involved in athletics and served as an assistant men's lacrosse coach at Georgetown, and was a member of the 1998 world champion U.S Men's Lacrosse Team.
Dr. Marchant is a native of the Annapolis area. As a student-athlete, Dr. Marchant developed early an interest in musculoskeletal injuries. After graduating from Severn School (Severna Park, MD) as a high school All-County and All-Metro lacrosse player, he went on to Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, MD) to obtain his pre-medical training. In addition to obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and achieving Academic All-American honors, as a lacrosse player he was a 4-time NCAA All-American midfielder.
Dr. Marchant is excited to return to the Chesapeake Bay area with his family, and provide outstanding orthopaedic care to the people in his hometown. He currently lives in Arnold, MD with his wife and their four children.
